February Newsletter – 1

(February 1– February 15)

In an era of unprecedented global connectivity, the struggles and resilience of Hindus facing violence and persecution often go unrecognized. This fortnightly report brings these overlooked narratives to light by providing an unbiased and comprehensive selection of news agencies’ reports offering an overview of incidents impacting the Hindu community worldwide, while also celebrating Hindu heritage. Through this initiative, we seek to raise awareness and advocate for the protection of Hindu rights and religious freedom globally.

Bangladesh

A UN report revealed that Bangladesh’s former government and security forces, along with Awami League-linked groups, committed serious human rights violations against Hindus, Ahmadiyya Muslims, and indigenous communities during and after last year’s anti-discrimination protests.

British MP Jas Athwal has raised serious concerns in the UK Parliament about rising violence against Hindus in Bangladesh and the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das. Athwal has called for global action to protect religious freedom and minority rights.

India's Minister of State for External Affairs revealed in Parliament that 76 attacks on Hindus occurred in Bangladesh between November 26, 2024, and January 25, 2025. The Indian government has raised concerns at the highest diplomatic levels, urging Bangladesh to take stronger action to protect minorities.

Since August 5, 2024, 23 Hindus have been killed, and 152 Hindu temples have been attacked in Bangladesh, the Indian government informed Parliament. Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh stated that 76 attacks on Hindus occurred in just two months (Nov 26, 2024 – Jan 25, 2025). India has raised concerns at the highest diplomatic levels, urging Bangladesh to protect minorities. The situation remains tense, with thousands of Hindus attempting to flee to India fearing persecution.

Pakistan

In Turbat, Balochistan, unidentified gunmen fatally shot three individuals, including two members of the minority Hindu community, and injured another. Authorities have labelled the incident as a targeted killing, though no group has claimed responsibility yet.

A group of 68 Pakistani Hindu devotees from Sindh visited Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, taking a holy dip in the Sangam and performing rituals for their ancestors. They expressed immense pride in their Sanatan Dharma heritage, calling the experience deeply spiritual and overwhelming.

India

Over 420 million people have taken a ritual bath so far at India's ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela — the largest human gathering in the world — according to figures published by the government's press information agency on Friday.

The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) transferred 18 employees, including teachers and officers, for engaging in non-Hindu religious activities despite taking an oath to follow Hindu traditions. The move, aimed at maintaining the temple's sanctity, was criticized by the opposition for alleged religious discrimination.

The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has resolved to free Hindu temples from government control, launching the Mandir Mukti Movement to demand their return to Hindu society. A phased action plan includes submitting representations to chief ministers, organizing public gatherings, and engaging lawmakers. The VHP insists temple funds should serve Hindu religious purposes, with transparent audits and inclusive temple management.

The 2,000-year-old Patteeswara Swamy temple in Perur is set for consecration on February 10 after 14 years, with lakhs of devotees expected. Major renovations include silver plating for the Nayaki Amman shrine door, new kalasams, and an annadaana koodam, while extensive security and traffic arrangements are in place.

Singapore

Singapore PM Lawrence Wong joined 10,000 devotees for the consecration ceremony of the Sri Siva-Krishna Temple, the only temple in Singapore dedicated to both Shiva and Krishna. The grand event featured traditional rituals, prayers, and community participation, reaffirming the temple’s role as a spiritual and cultural hub.
