Sh. Rahul Sur

 Former IPS officer and a Former United Nations (UN) official 

Mr. Rahul Sur is a former IPS officer and a former United Nations (UN) official with a 40-year track record of effective service at the national and international level 

 

As an IPS officer, he served in various places in Maharashtra, including as Deputy Commissioner of Policein Mumbai, where he initiated decisive action against many drug traffickers.He took premature retirement at the rank of Inspector General.

 

In the UN, Mr. Sur served in the Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS) in its Headquarters and field locations. Critical positions held included the Chief of Peacekeeping Evaluationwhere he supervised teams assessing the effectiveness of UN peacekeepingmission that have an annual budget of $ 6 billion.  His numerous evaluation reports had a notable impact, including being acted upon by the Security Council and the General Assembly. He served as the Chief of Conduct and Discipline in the Office of the Special-Representative of the Secretary-General (OSRSG) in the UN peacekeeping mission in Haiti.He also established the first field investigation presence of OIOS in Timor-Leste after the country’s independence referendum in 1999. He is an expert at various facets of the UN’s functioning and is widely traveled in Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, and Europe. He retired from the UN in 2021.

 

He has a bachelor’s degree from St. Stephen’s College, a law degree fromDelhi University, a masters’ degree from Harvard University, and has studied drug abuse policy in the Johns Hopkins University. Besides Hindi and English, he also speaks Punjabi, Marathi, and French.
